Ice conditions on the Rainy River are steadily building, but anglers are reminded to use caution due to current that can keep ice thinner in some areas. While most of the action is focused off the main lake right now, a few resorts have checked and marked safe river ice for hardy anglers looking for walleyes, saugers, and lake sturgeon.
Fishing reports from guides and travelers say working through a local outfitter or resort remains the safest and most productive option this early in ice season. They offer ice houses, transported access, and daily checks of conditions, giving visitors peace of mind while they focus on catching fish.

During a regular session last week, the Roseau county board approved the appointment of Dr. Quinn Piper as Roseau County’s Medical Examiner, pending execution of an agreement with Anoka County. The change follows the departure of the county’s previous examiner due to staffing changes at the University of North Dakota. Officials emphasized that the transition ensures continuity in legally required death investigations without interruption. While not a topic that draws much public attention, commissioners noted that having qualified forensic expertise in place is a critical—and often unseen—part of county operations.
The Minnesota DNR’s 2025 highlights report also points to continued investment in outdoor access and conservation across the state. Projects ranged from wildlife management area planning to improved access for hunters, anglers, and outdoor recreationists.

For Roseau and Lake of the Woods counties, the report reinforces the importance of public lands to both quality of life and the local economy. DNR officials say these investments are designed to ensure northern Minnesota’s natural resources remain accessible and protected for future generations.
