The I-500 is a legendary race that every terrain racer dreams of, even trail riders. Sled reliability and durability are crucial, as the high speeds over 500 miles can cause significant wear and tear on snowmobiles. For most participants, about 95%, the goal is to finish the race, not just to win.

In the early years of the I-500, race sleds were distinguished from high-quality consumer trail sleds, often reinforced with shock packages. The I-500 is unique among races over 500 miles because it is not a team event where two sleds or multiple racers share the workload. Originally, the three-day I-500 race started in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and finished in St. Paul, Minnesota. Although it has undergone several changes, it remains a challenging race that requires racers to stay focused as the miles accumulate. Today, the race is known as the Goodridge-Grygla 500, conducted over two days and covering 500 miles, filled with the same treacherously rough ditches, deep holes, rivers, woods, and fields.

The 500 continues to thrive largely thanks to the support of former racers, club members, and enthusiasts from the Goodridge & Grygla snowmobile clubs.
