It was a busy and competitive weekend across the region in high school, college, and professional sports, with plenty of action on the ice and the court, plus important results from Minnesota’s pro teams and postseason hockey on the international stage.
Boys Hockey:
On Friday, Roseau fell to St. Michael-Albertville by a final of 9–1, then followed it up by skating to a 1–1 tie on Saturday with the St. Cloud Crush.
Kittson County Central picked up a 3–1 win over Park Rapids on Saturday, while Ely defeated Lake of the Woods 11–3.
Girls Hockey:
Roseau earned a win over section opponent Brainerd–Little Falls, taking a 3–2 victory Saturday afternoon.
Boys Basketball:
Roseau and Warroad traded opponents on Friday and Saturday, and the Rams boys won both of their games, beating Menahga 79–51 and Wadena–Deer Creek 58–51. Warroad also claimed victory in both of their games.
Girls Basketball:
Menahga’s girls team earned back-to-back wins over Roseau and Warroad in games played Friday and Saturday.

NBA:
The Minnesota Timberwolves picked up back-to-back wins, defeating Miami on Saturday and Washington last night.
NHL:
The Minnesota Wild earned a Friday night win over Anaheim but fell 5–4 in a shootout to Los Angeles on Saturday night. The Wild also had Matt Boldy, Quinn Hughes, and Brock Faber named to the Americans hockey roster for the Winter Olympics. The Wild play at the Kings tonight.
In other hockey, the U.S. team was eliminated by Finland in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Championships being played in St. Paul. More recently, Czechia defeated Canada in the semifinals and will face Sweden in the championship game. Canada will play Finland for the bronze medal.
NFL:
The Minnesota Vikings finished the regular season with five straight wins, closing out the year with a 9–8 record after beating the Green Bay Packers 16–3 yesterday. J.J. McCarthy returned from injury but left at halftime after aggravating his hand. Justin Jefferson once again reached the 1,000-yard mark for the season, C.J. Ham scored a touchdown in what could be his final Vikings game, and safety Harrison Smith has likely said goodbye. The Packers rested many of their starters in preparation for the playoffs.
