Raymond Warren Green Jr., Age 97, of Fargo, North Dakota passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025. Ray was born in Warroad, MN on August 26, 1927, the son of Raymond and Sophie (Monson) Green. Preceded in death by his first wife, Isabelle and his brothers, Ronald and Dennis Green.
Remaining to cherish Ray’s memory are his wife, Yvonne; his children, Debbie (Bob), Paul (Barb) and Jennifer (Kurt); stepchildren Roger (Jenny), Darin, Renae (Lincoln) and Larry (Karla); 18 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to caregiver, Maia, for her dedicated companionship to Ray the past five years.
Ray graduated from Warroad High School in 1945. He attended Bemidji State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1950, followed by a master’s degree from the University of North Dakota in 1964. Ray entered the U.S. Navy in August 1945 and was honorably discharged one year later.
On January 4, 1951, Ray married Isabelle Landby. They had three children, Debbie, Paul and Jennifer and were married for 30 years, until Isabelle’s death in 1981. The families of Ray and Isabelle were neighbors in the small community of Swift, MN and Ray was loved like a brother by Isabelle’s family. Ray met his second wife, Yvonne Riskey Olimb, after his return to Warroad. They married March 2, 1986, and were married for 39 years until his passing.
Ray began his teaching career in Badger, MN in 1950, followed by 15 years in Warroad schools and 15 years in Bloomington, MN. He retired in 1984.
Ray’s love for nature inspired him to be a dedicated steward of the land. He enjoyed fishing on Lake of the Woods for pleasure and as a guide for local launch services. Ray readily shared his knowledge of botany, cloud formations and the night sky, especially with children.
Whether directing choirs, organizing singalongs or curating his radio show Uncle Ray’s Musical Memories, this “music man” skillfully used his passion to build community and spread joy. Despite his failing eyesight, Ray remained curious and interested in what was going on around him and current events. Many of the greetings received by the family emphasize his kindness and integrity. Ray truly walked his values. “He brought a lot of good into this world and never made any fuss over it.” – a former student.
