THEY ARE NOW SAYING THAT THE TRAIN DERAILMENT IN KITTSON COUNTY NEAR LANCASTER MAY TAKE 10 DAYS OR MORE TO CLEAN UP, BUT STILL NO LEAKS OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS HAVE BEEN DETECTED AND NO INJURIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. SOME OF HIGHWAY 59, NORTH OF LAKE BRONSON TO LANCASTER IS CLOSED. AROUND 25 CARS IN TOTAL WERE INVOLVED IN THAT DERAILMENT.

A RED LAKE MAN HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES RELATED TO A DRUNK DRIVING CRASH IN NOVEMBER OF 2021. 27-YEAR OLD GERALD JOHNSON WAS DRIVING OVER 90 MPH ON A 20 MPH PUBLIC ROAD, HE LOST CONTROL, AND THE PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE DIED. HIS BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT WAS .224.

AUTHORITIES IN THE ST CLOUD AREA ARE LOOKING FOR A KAYAKER THAT WENT MISSING ON WEDNESDAY ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. HE’S DESCRIBED AS A 39-YEAR OLD WHITE MALE. THERE WAS A REPORT FROM A BOATER ON THE RIVER OF AN OVERTURNED KAYAK.

THE COMO ZOO IN ST PAUL HAS A NEW SNOW LEOPARD CUB. THE YET-TO-BE-NAMED CUB AND HER MOTHER REMAIN IN A MATERNITY DEN, NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. ZOOKEEPERS SAID THAT IN THE WILD A NEWBORN CUB WILL OFTEN REMAIN IN THE DEN FOR UP TO 3 MONTHS BEFORE GREETING THE WORLD, SO THEY’LL EXPECT THEM ON EXHIBIT LATER THIS SUMMER.

Tens of thousands of school bus drivers, nutrition staff, paraprofessionals and education support staff in Minnesota can apply for unemployment insurance benefits.
Minnesota lawmakers this month approved, and Gov. Tim Walz signed into law, a change that allows the workers to access partial wage replacement through the state if they’re unable to find temporary work during the summer.
The law makes Minnesota the first state to issue benefits to hourly school workers laid off after the school year ends on a permanent basis.

Ernest passed away at the age of 84.

A Memorial Service for Katie Olson of Roseau will be held at the Malung School in Malung on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11:00am with a visitation an hour prior.

A Funeral Service for Roger A. Birkeland of Baudette, MN will be held on Monday, June 5, 2023 at 11:00AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place at Silver Creek Cemetery in Baudette.
Roger passed away at the age of 85.

Murray A. Odegaard, 65, passed away after complications with Covid Pneumonia, on February 18, 2023.
Family and friends are welcome to a celebration of life for Murray Odegaard. It will be held at 11 A.M. on June 3, 2023, at the Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau, Minnesota. Those who wish to remember Murray in a special way are welcome.
