CREATING A SEPARATE BEAR MANAGEMENT UNIT FOR THE NORTHWEST ANGLE WOULD GIVE THE DNR MORE FLEXIBILITY IN SETTING BEAR PERMIT QUOTAS FOR THE AREA AND HOPEFULLY PROVIDE MORE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITY, THE AGENCY SAID. HOWEVER, THE RED LAKE BAND OF CHIPPEWA IS OPPOSING A PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH A NEW BEAR HUNTING UNIT FOR THE ANGLE, MUCH OF WHICH IS OWNED BY THE TRIBE. THE BAND SAYS IN A LETTER THAT THE BAND’S LAND IS OFTEN NOT RESPECTED BY RESIDENTS AND VISITORS TO THE ANGLE, AND THAT WOULD ONLY BE EXASPERATED BY THIS PLAN. THE RED LAKE BAND DOES NOT ALLOW BEAR HUNTING ON THEIR TRIBAL LANDS. HE ALSO CRITICIZED THE DNR FOR NOT CONSULTING WITH THE BAND, AND RATHER LEARNED OF IT BY READING AN ARTICLE IN A NEWSPAPER.

ONE PERSON DIED IN A SUNDAY CRASH ON HIGHWAY 210 NEAR UNDERWOOD IN OTTER TAIL COUNTY. THE CRASH INVOLVED A CHEVY MALIBU AND FORD F650 STRAIGHT TRUCK, SIMILAR TO A TRUCK USED BY MOVING COMPANIES. THE MALIBU HAD JUST THE DRIVER, THE TRUCK HAD A TOTAL OF NINE PEOPLE. IT’S UNCLEAR AT THE TIME IF ALL NINE WERE RIDING IN THE CAB, OR IF SOME WERE IN THE CARGO PORTION OF THE TRUCK. THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

NORTHLAND COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE IS SET TO LAUNCH AND E-SPORTS TEAM THIS AUGUST. THEY WILL HAVE TEAMS FROM EACH OF IT’S CAMPUSES AND THEY WILL COMPETE IN THE NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.

THE ROSEAU TIMES REGION THIS WEEK HAS A STORY ON THE ROSEAU COUNTY LANDOWNERS COALITION SENDING A LETTER TO THE ROSEAU RIVER WATERSHED BOARD AND MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES EXPLAINING WHY THEY OPPOSE THE ROSEAU LAKE PROJECT. THE BIGGEST BEING THAT THE PROJECT WOULD FLOOD THEIR FARMLAND, RENDERING IT USELESS. REASONS LISTED FOR THE PROJECT INCLUDE WETLAND HABITAT, FLOOD REDUCTION FOR AREAS OUTSIDE OF ROSEAU, AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES.

MORE MINNESOTA FAMILIES TURNED TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS AS THE PANDEMIC ENTERED IT’S THIRD YEAR OF AFFECTING SCHOOLS. IN TOTAL 3, 833 MORE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS, THAT’S 5.8%, WHILE PUBLIC SCHOOLS LOST .3% OF IT’S TOTAL ENROLLMENT.
