With Christmas Day now behind us, there are no games to report on from yesterday — but teams at every level are gearing up for a busy stretch ahead.
Prep sports resume today with several holiday tournament matchups involving area teams and nearby communities. In boys hockey, the Thief River Falls Holiday Meet gets underway at the REA, along with Tartan visiting Thief River Falls tonight. Girls basketball action includes Cass Lake competing at the Turtle Mountain Tournament in North Dakota. On the boys basketball side, Hawley faces St. Croix Lutheran at St. Cloud Tech, while Cass Lake takes on Heritage Christian Academy in tournament play. Schools from Warroad, Baudette, Grygla, and Greenbush-Badger are also back on the court and ice this weekend as holiday tournaments continue.
At the college level, football fans can tune in this afternoon as the Minnesota Golden Gophers take on New Mexico in the Rate Bowl in Phoenix, with kickoff set for 3:30. Basketball seasons continue for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, North Dakota Fighting Hawks, and North Dakota State Bison as conference play approaches.
In Minnesota professional sports, the Minnesota Wild are in the thick of the NHL season, the Minnesota Timberwolves continue their NBA schedule, and the Minnesota Vikings are battling through the critical final weeks of the NFL regular season.
