STRONG WINDS SEPARATED A LARGE SECTION OF ICE FROM THE MAINLAND ALONG THE SOUTHERN SHORELINE OF UPPER RED LAKE YESTERDAY, STRANDING AROUND 200 ANGLERS ON THAT SHEET OF ICE. THE BELTRAMI COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND OTHER AGENCIES RESPONDED, PLACING A TEMPORARY ICE BRIDGE NEAR JR’S CORNER, AND EVERYONE WAS EVACUATED SAFELY. NICK PRACHAR, WITH THE DNR, SAID THE AGENCY WAS WELL PREPARED FOR SUCH AN INCIDENT AS IT IS NOT RARE EARLY IN THE SEASON.

TWO KITTSON COUNTY DEPUTIES, ALONG WITH THEIR SHERIFF-ELECT, HELPED TO FREE TWO BUCKS WHO WERE STUCK WITH THE ANTLERS ENTANGLED ON NOVEMBER 23. THE DEPUTIES WERE ON PATROL EAST OF HALLOCK WHEN THEY SAW THE DEER IN A FIELD. EVENTUALLY THEY WERE ABLE TO GET WITHIN ABOUT 20 YARDS, AND SHERIFF-ELECT MATT VIG USED A RIFLE TO SHOOT THE ANTLERS, BREAKING THEM APART.

A FIRE DESTROYED A FAMILY HOME IN FERTILE OVER THE WEEKEND, BUT THE FAMILY AND DOGS ARE ALL SAFE. THEY ARE CALLING THE HOME A TOTAL LOSS. THEY BELIEVE THE FIRE STARTED IN THE GARAGE BEFORE SPREADING TO THE HOME.

THE GREENBUSH BADGER LIONS ARE HOSTING THEIR ANNUAL FUN NIGHT THIS FRIDAY AT THE GREENBUSH FIREHALL FROM 6-8 PM. THEY’LL SERVE A CATERED MEAL, HAVE GAMES, DOOR PRIZES, AND RAFFLES. PRESALE DONATIONS ARE $25, OR $30 AT THE DOOR.

SANTA COMES TO THE WANNASKA COMMUNITY CENTER ON FRIDAY EVENING, AND WILL BE AT THE ROSEAU CITY CENTER FOR SUPER SANTA SATURDAY THIS WEEKEND.

THE CROOKSTON SCHOOL BOARD MET LAST NIGHT, WITH A MAIN POINT OF DISCUSSION BEING THEIR SEARCH FOR A NEW SUPERINTENDENT. DAVE KEUHN IS CURRENTLY SERVING AS INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT.

A FUNERAL SERVICE FOR FAYOLA D. PALM OF WANNASKA WILL BE HELD THIS MORNING (11 AM) AT RIVERSIDE LUTHERAN CHURCH IN WANNASKA. INTERMENT WILL BE AT PALMVILLE CEMETERY. FAY PALM WAS 86.
