Alvin (Buddy) Ronald Fugleberg passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on Monday, July 17, 2023, at age 90.

Buddy was born May 6, 1933, in Roseau, Minnesota to Alvin and Esther (Lundgren) Fugleberg. He attended elementary school through eighth grade in a one room school in District 51. Then he attended Roseau High School, graduating in 1951. He played football and hockey in high school. He was actively involved in 4-H, exhibiting at the county and state fair.

Following graduation, he farmed with his father, and during the winter he worked for the Great Northern Railroad doing telegraph line replacement.

He enlisted in the Army in January 1954. After basic training in Arkansas and Georgia, he spent a year in Okinawa, and then in Iwo Jima. After his discharge in November of 1955, he returned to Roseau. He married Shirley Sunsten on August 18, 1956. They had three children Gail, Larry, and Karin.

When in the Army he was given an aptitude test and was selected for training as a mechanic. This training led him to employment as a mechanic at Jackson Pontiac and Jackson Ford. He was later employed at the Roseau County Highway Department and retired in 1998.

Buddy and Shirley spent nine winters in Phoenix, Arizona enjoying the sunshine and time with their family.

Buddy loved the outdoors throughout every season. He enjoyed their cabin at Buffalo Point and loved fishing during the summer. Hunting camp was another of his favorite places, and he looked forward to deer hunting season. He shot his last deer in November 2021 at age 88. Buddy enjoyed the snow as well and spent many hours snowmobiling and continued to shovel his own driveway. In the winter, he also enjoyed wood carving and building model airplanes. He was an avid sports fan attending many high school hockey games and watching the Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Vikings.

Buddy was very proud of his military service and was an active member of the American Legion, serving as a member of the Honor Guard for many years.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Gail (Nick) Svor, Larry (Erika) Fugleberg, Karin (Randy Mueller) Roseen.

Seven grandchildren: Andrea (Svor) Coxon, Mitch Svor, Brett Svor, Marisa Fugleberg, Aaron Fugleberg, Taylor Roseen, Luke Roseen.

Eight great-grandchildren: Blayke Coxon, Callie Coxon, Chase Coxon, Brooks Svor, Miles Svor, Finn Svor, Charlie Svor, Sadie Svor.

Siblings: Marge Olson, Donna Magnusson, Marlys Arneson, Lloyd Fugleberg.

Numerous nieces and nephews, and their families.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Esther Fugleberg, parents-in-law Hjalmer and Violet Sunsten, brothers-in-law Floyd Olson, Buddy Magnusson, Jimmy Arneson, and son-in-law Terry Roseen.

A Memorial Service for Alvin “Buddy” Fugleberg of Roseau will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at First United Lutheran Church in Roseau at 2:00pm with a visitation an hour prior.
