A BLOCKADE OF TRUCKS AND FARM EQUIPMENT FORMED YESTERDAY AT THE PEMBINA BORDER CROSSING, PROTESTING THE VACCINE MANDATE FOR TRUCKERS. THE PROTESTS STOPPED TRAFFIC IN NORTHBOUND AND SOUTHBOUND LANES ON THE CANADIAN SIDE INTO THE EVENING. THE PORT REMAINED OPEN, BUT TRAFFIC COULD NOT PROCEED FAR INTO THE COUNTRY.

THE ROSEAU POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS RELEASED INFORMATION ON A LEVEL 3 SEX OFFENDER, RORIE ALYN COPELAND, THAT HAS MOVED INTO THE VICINITY OF THE WEST SIDE TRAILER COURT IN ROSEAU. A COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION MEETING WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16TH, AT 7 PM IN THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS IN THE CITY CENTER.

A federal judge in California on Thursday ruled that gray wolves across most of the U.S. are again protected under the federal Endangered Species Act, overturning last year’s move by the Trump administration to hand wolf management back to individual states. With federal Endangered Species Act protections now back in place for wolves, hunting is once again prohibited in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and most other states where wolves roam. The federal government has 60 days to appeal the court’s decision.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HEADS ARE WARNING MINNESOTA FARMERS TO PREPARE FOR DEADLY AVIAN INFLUENZA IN 2022. SEVERAL CASES ARE BEING FOUND IN DUCKS KILLED BY HUNTERS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES, AND THEY FEAR THE WATERFOWL MIGRATION IS ALMOST CERTAIN TO BRING IT TO MINNESOTA THIS SPRING AND SUMMER. FOR MANY IN THE POULTRY INDUSTRY THIS SOUNDS UNCOMFORTABLY SIMILAR TO 2015, WHEN ABOUT 9 MILLION BIRD IN MINNESOTA AND 50 MILLION ACROSS THE COUNTRY WERE KILLED BY THE VIRUS OR EUTHANIZED.

THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES HAS SCHEDULED TWO PUBLIC INPUT MEETINGS FOR NEXT WEEK TO DISCUSS A PROPOSAL TO CREATE A NEW BEAR HUNTING UNIT SPECIFICALLY FOR THE NORTHWEST ANGLE. A MEETING IS WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE ANGLE INLET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THURSDAY AT THE WARROAD DNR OFFICE. THE PROPOSAL WOULD ALLOW THEM TO CREATE SEPARATE BEAR HUNTING QUOTAS FOR THE NORTHWEST ANGLE, SEPARATE FROM THE AREA THAT IT IS CURRENTLY LUMPED IN WITH, WHICH STRETCHES ALL THE WAY SOUTH THE RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, EAST TO BAUDETTE.

A FUNERAL SERVICE FOR RICHARD SPENST OF WARROAD WILL BE HELD MONDAY (11 AM) AT WOODLAND BIBLE CHURCH IN WARROAD. VISITATION WILL BE SUNDAY (5-7 PM) AT HELGESON FUNERAL HOME IN WARROAD WITH A 6:00 PRAYER SERVICE. INTERMENT WILL BE HELD AT A LATER DATE. RICHARD SPENST WAS 77.
