HE HAS BEGUN TRACKING WHAT ARE CALLED THAWING DAYS BEGINNING IN JANUARY. THE MORE THAWING DAYS, THE QUICKER THE ICE IS MELTING. TO DETERMINE A THAWING DAY, HE USES SOMEWHAT OF A COMPLICATED FORMULA. ADD THE DAILY HIGH TO THE DAILY LOW, DIVIDE BY TWO, AND THEN SUBTRACT 32. IF YOU STILL END UP WITH A POSITIVE NUMBER, THAT WAS A GOOD DAY FOR MELTING ICE. SO FAR, THERE HAVE BEEN FEWER OF THOSE THAN NORMAL.

THE MINNESOTA DNR IS SEEKING INPUT ON A PROPOSED EXPANSION OF ELK ZONE 20, THAT IS NEAR LANCASTER. THE PROPOSAL WOULD EXPAND THAT HUNTING ZONE BY SIX MILES TO THE EST AND 3 MILES SOUTH. THEY SAY SURVEYS SHOW THAT THE ELK HAVE EXPANDED THEIR RANGE, AND THIS ZONE WOULD BETTER ENCOMPASS THAT AREA. THEY’LL TAKE PUBLIC COMMENT THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH.
