A MAHNOMEN COUNTY FARMER IS CHALLENGING THE TRIBES JURISDICTION OVER HIS FARM THAT IS ONE MILE OUTSIDE RESERVATION LINES, BUT WITHIN A FIVE-MILE BUFFER ZONE THAT WAS CREATED BY THE TRIBAL GOVERNMENT LAST YEAR. IT RELATES TO HIM BEING GIVEN A CITATION AND BEIGN TOLD HE NEEDS A $5000 PERMIT TO PUMP WATER FOR IRRIGATION FROM THE WILD RICE RIVER, AND POTENTIALLY OVER USE OF PESTICIDES AND HERBICIDES. HE SAYS HE DOESN’T BELIEVE THE TRIBE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL DECISIONS ON HIS FARM WHEN IT’S OUTSIDE OF TRIBAL LAND. HE USED AN ARGUMENT OF IF HE CAN’T VOTE IN THEIR TRIBAL ELECTIONS, WHY CAN THEY CONTROL HIS FARM. THE ISSUE WILL LIKELY END UP IN A LENGTHY LEGAL BATTLE.

MINNESOTA SAW JOB GROWTH FOR 9 OUT THE LAST 12 MONTHS, AFTER REPORTS SHOW THE STATE GAINED 3000 JOBS FROM DECEMBER TO JANUARY. ALSO ENCOURAGING, MINNESOTA SAW AVERAGE HOURLY WAGES OUT GAINED INFLATION BY 1.9% IN 2023.

THIS WEEK THIEF RIVER FALLS POLICE RELEASED THAT ONE OF THEIR K-9 UNITS HAD PASSED AWAY UNEXPECTEDLY. ON FEBRUARY 29TH, K-9 MAX WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS KENNEL. AFTER A NECROPSY WAS PERFORMED, THEY DETERMINED HE DIED FROM A CONDITION COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS STOMACH FLIP. MAX WAS A 10-YEAR OLD BELGIUM MALLINOIS AND WAS THE FIRST EVER K-9 WITH THE THIEF RIVER FALLS POLICE DEPARTMENT, BEGINNING THAT CAREER IN 2017.

A Funeral Service for Elijah Major will take place Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the Lake of the Woods School at 1:00 pm with a visitation two hours prior. Interment will take place at Elm Park Cemetery.

A funeral service for Frank Marvin of Warroad, MN, will take place on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Warroad High School Gym at 4:30 pm. A visitation will take place the night before at the Wm. S. Marvin Training and Visitor Center in Warroad at 4:30 pm with a prayer service at 6:00 pm.

A CARDBOARD SLED OLYMPICS PLANNED FOR SUNDAY AT THE MALUNG COMMUNITY CENTER WILL NOT HAPPEN DUE TO POOR CONDITIONS.
