UNITED STATES CORN FARMERS MARKED A RECORD HARVEST IN 2023, DESPITE TOUGH CONDITIONS IN MANY AREAS. MINNESOTA FARMERS PLANTED 690,000 MORE ACRES OF CORN IN 2023 THAN THEY DID IN 2022, AND THEY PULLED IN A 4% INCREASE IN TOTAL HARVEST. NATIONWIDE, IT WAS A RECORD HARVEST OF 177.3 BUSHELS PER ACRE. IN OTHER CROPS, SUGAR BEETS HAD A RECORD YEAR, BUT A STATE SOYBEAN HARVEST WAS DOWN ABOUT 5%.

A STUDY FROM UPGRADED POINTS SHOWED THAT MINNESOTA RESIDENTS WERE PROJECTED TO SPEND 25.5% MORE ON UTILITY BILLS THIS WINTER, THAT OF COURSE, COULD NOT HAVE PREDICTED THE MORE MILD WEATHER WE’VE SEEN FOR MUCH OF IT. NATIONWIDE, THAT NUMBER WAS ABOUT 30%.

A MINNESOTA STATE TROOPER HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH MURDER, ASSOCIATED WITH THE SHOOTING OF A MOTORIST LAST SUMMER IN MINNEAPOLIS. TROOPER RYAN LONDREGAN WAS ONE OF THREE ON THE SCENE ALONG I-94 ON JULY 31. RICKY COBB II WAS THE DRIVER, WHO ATTEMPTED TO PULL AWAY DURING A TRAFFIC STOP AND THEN WAS SHOT FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW. A GUN WAS FOUND IN THE CAR, BUT BODY CAMERA FOOTAGE NEVER SHOWED COBB IN POSSESSION OF THE FIREARM.

A Memorial Service for Quentin F. Grittner of Roseau, MN will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 11:00AM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 5-7PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. Interment will take place at Malung Cemetery at a later date.
Quentin passed away at the age of 85.

A Memorial Service for Lois B. Hamlin of Warroad, MN will be held tomorrow at 2:00PM at the Warroad Senior Living Center Chapel. Interment will take place at America Cemetery at a later date.
Lois passed away at the age of 86.

A Funeral Service for Beatrice Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN will be held this afternoon at 2:00PM at Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush.  Interment will take place at Bethel Cemetery in Greenbush, MN.
Beatrice passed away at the age of 94.

IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE IN GRAND FORKS TOMORROW AND ARE IN NEED OF A QUICK LUNCH OR DINNER, CULVER’S IN GRAND FORKS WILL BE DONATING A PORTION OF THE DAYS PROCEEDS TO THE VETERAN’S HONOR FLIGHT, WHICH SENDS VETERANS TO WASHINGTON DC FOR TOURS. THE NEXT SCHEDULED FLIGHT IS IN MAY, AND THEY HAVE ADDED A SECOND PLANE, SO TWO WILL MAKE A TRIP IN THE FALL. THAT PROGRAM IS SEEING INCREDIBLE DEMAND.

THE MINNESOTA WILD AND ST PAUL MAYOR ARE ASKING FOR $2 MILLION FOR PLANNING AND PRE-DESIGN ON WHAT COULD BE A POSSIBLE $300 MILLION RENOVATION TO THE XCEL ENERGY CENTER. THEY STILL DON’T HAVE A SOLID GRASP ON JUST WHAT EXACTLY ALL OF THE IMPROVEMENTS NEED TO BE.
