32-YEAR OLD DAVID ROBERT BENSON OF THIEF RIVER FALLS WAS SENTENCED ON TUESDAY TO 81 MONTHS FOR HIS ROLE IN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CRIMES IN POLK COUNTY. HE WAS STOPPED BY EAST GRAND FORKS POLICE LAST JANUARY FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS. HE TOLD LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT WAS GIVEN METH BY NOAH TYRELL HAWKINS, IN PART FOR PAYMENT FOR DRIVING HAWKINS TO INTERNATIONAL FALLS FOR A DELIVERY OF METH. HAWKINS HAS ALREADY BEEN SENTENCED FOR DRUG CONSPIRACY CHARGES.

THE FIRST WARROAD COMMUNITY TOWN HALL MEETING WILL BE HELD MARCH 19 AT THE WARROAD HIGH SCHOOL. AMONG PRESENTATIONS WILL BE THE NEW ARTS, CULTURE,AND EVENTS CENTER, AN UPDATE BY LIFECARE, A RECAP OF COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM HOCKEY DAY MINNESOTA, AND PLANNING FOR THE 4TH OF JULY.

IN OTHER NOTES FROM A FEBRUARY ROSEAU CITY COUNCIL MEETING:
CITY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR TODD PETERSON SAID THE NEW OWNERS OF THE FORMER VFW BUILDING IN ROSEAU HAVE RUN INTO SOME OBSTACLES, BUT THAT THEY DO STILL PLAN TO OPERATE A BUSINESS IN THAT SPACE. IT CAME AS PART OF DISCUSSING THAT THE VFW STILL HAS A SPONSORSHIP ON THE MEMORIAL ARENA ZAMBONI.
THEY AGREED TO PUT TOGETHER A GRANT APPLICATION THAT COULD GIVE UP TO $300,000 IN ASSISTANCE FOR CHILDCARE FACILITIES. THOSE APPLICATIONS WOULD BE DUE MARCH 12.
THEY FURTHER DISCUSSED A 2025 HIGHWAY 11 RECONSTUCTION PROJECT THAT IS PLANNED, A CONVERSION OF HIGHWAY 89 TO AN URBAN SECTION, AND A ROSEAU RIVER PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE THAT IS PLANNED TO HAVE WORK DONE THIS YEAR WITH COMPLETION NEXT SPRING.

FELONY SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST 26-YEAR OLD MARC RAYMOND STOLTENBERG OF WANNASKA HAVE BEEN DROPPED. HE WAS CHARGED IN NOVEMBER WITH TWO COUNTS AFTER HE WAS ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING A THEN 8-YEAR OLD BOY TWICE IN 2012, WHEN STOLTENBERG WOULD HAVE BEEN 15 YEARS OLD. DOCUMENTS DIDN’T SPECIFTY WHY THOSE CHARGES WERE DROPPED, BUT HIS MOTHER HAD FILED AN AFFIDAVIT PROVIDING PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE THAT HER SON WAS OUT OF STATE ON THE FOURTH OF JULY IN 2012, WHEN ONE OF THE ALLEGED ASSAULTS WAS REPORTED TO HAVE OCCURRED.

GOVERNOR TIM WALZ ANNOUNCED $53 MILLION THAT WILL BE GOING TOWARDS EXPANDING BROADBAND SERVICES TO AN ESTIMATED 8,9000 HOMES AND BUSINESSES. IN THOSE GRANTS, WIKSTROM TELEPHONE COMPANY WILL RECEIVE JUST OVER $3 MILLION FOR WORK IN KITTSON COUNTY.

64-YEAR OLD DENNIS HOVET OF GOODRIDGE WAS ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY AND THEFT, AND THE AGENCIES INVOLVED ARE THANKING THE PUBLIC FOR THEIR INFORMATION THAT HELPED LEAD TO THE ARREST. THE CASE INVOLVED MULTIPLE STOLEN FIREARMS. TEH CASE DOES REMAIN OPEN AS NOT ALL OF THE FIREARMS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED.

THE ROSEAU AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY WILL HONOR THE ROSEAU AMERICAN LEGION POST 24 WITH A 105TH BIRTHDAY PARTY ON SUNDAY MARCH 17. ALL LEGION AND SAL MEMBER ARE INVITED WITH SPOUSES OR PARTNERS. A SOCIAL HOUR BEGINS AT 5:30 WITH SUPPER AT 6:00.

A Funeral Service for Elijah Major will take place Saturday, March 9, 2024 at the Lake of the Woods School at 1:00 pm with a visitation two hours prior. Interment will take place at Elm Park Cemetery.

A funeral service for Frank Marvin of Warroad, MN, will take place on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the Warroad High School Gym at 4:30 pm. A visitation will take place the night before at the Wm. S. Marvin Training and Visitor Center in Warroad at 4:30 pm with a prayer service at 6:00 pm.
