THERE WILL BE AN OPEN HOUSE FOR THE ROSEAU SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30 FROM 5:00-7:30 PM. THE MAILINGS ALSO WENT OUT YESTERDAY TO ALL ELEMENTARY FAMILIES, WHERE THEY WILL LEARN THEIR CHILD’S TEACHER FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR.

33-YEAR OLD ROSEAU RESIDENT BRANDON TYRONE HAMILTON HAD HIS FIRST VIRTUAL COURT APPEARANCE YESTERDAY, FACING NINE CHARGES, SEVEN OF THOSE ARE FELONIES. THE MOST SEVERE IS FIRST-DEGREE METHAMPHETAMINE OR COCAINE SALES, OTHERS INCLUDE SECOND-DEGREE ASSAULT, DOMESTIC ASSAULT BY STRANGULATION, AND THIRD DEGREE NARCOTIC SALES. IT ALL DATES TO MAY 9TH WHEN HE ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED HIS GIRLFRIEND AND THREATENED HER WITH A GUN. HE EVENTUALLY FLED THAT SCENE BY CAR WITH A FRIEND, DITCHED BAGS OF DRUGS FROM THE WINDOW, WHICH WERE RECOVERED BY POLICE.

IN WEEKLY CONSERVATION OFFICER REPORTS, THEY NOTE THEY HAVE STARTED KEEPING AN EYE ON BEAR BAITING AS THE OPENING WEEKEND FOR ESTABLISHING THOSE BAITS CAME AND WENT. IN THIEF RIVER FALLS THEY ALSO ASSISTED WITH A DRIVER THAT HAD FLED THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT ON FOOT INTO THE WOODS.

FOR THOSE WHO HARVEST WILD RICE, DNR EXPERTS SAY IT MAY NOT BE UNTIL THE END OF AUGUST OR EARLY SEPTEMBER WHERE YOU’LL BE ABLE TO LEGALLY HARVEST THE CROP. AUGUST 15TH IS THE EARLIEST DATE, BUT STATE LAW ALSO DEMANDS THAT RICE BE FULLY RIPE, AND THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED YET. ONLY 1,164 PEOPLE PURCHASED SEASONAL LICENSES IN THE STATE THIS YEAR. ONCE UPON A TIME, NEARLY 17,000 PEOPLE WOULD PURCHASE YEARLY.

A 34-YEAR OLD MALE INMATE WAS FOUND ALONE AND UNRESPONSIVE IN HIS CELL LAST THURSDAY AT THE ST LOUIS COUNTY JAIL. THERE WERE NO OBVIOUS PHYSICAL SIGNS AS TO THE CAUSE OF DEATH AND THERE HAD BEEN NO ALTERCATIONS. THE DEATH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

PROSECUTORS HAVE RULED THAT A DULUTH POLICE OFFICER WAS JUSTIFIED IN FATALLY SHOOTING A MILITARY VETERAN WHO HAD BRANDISHED A KNIFE AND CHARGED AT POLICE DURING A FEBRUARY INCIDENT. IT’S NOTED THAT TASERS WERE, BUT DID NOT SLOW THE MAN, BEFORE SHOTS WERE FIRED. THE MAN HAD A HISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND HAD RECENTLY SENT THREATENING TEXT MESSAGES TO HIS SISTER.
