A MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED FOR HIS ALLEGED INVOLVEMENT IN THE HUMAN SMUGGLING OPERATION IN 2022 THAT RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF A FAMILY OF FOUR NEAR THE CANADIAN BORDER. HARSHKUMAR PATEL IS BELIEVED TO HAVE RECRUITED STEVE SHAND, WHO WAS THE DRIVER ARRESTED NEAR THE BORDER, WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE THE ARRANGED PICKUP. PATEL IS BELIEVED TO BE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT HIMSELF.

A COLLECTION OF BILLS CALLED THE GREAT START AFFORDABILITY ACT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE THAT WOULD LOOK TO MAKE EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE MORE AFFORDABLE. THE BILL IS AIMED AT THE MIDDLE CLASS AND COULD CAP THE COST AT 7% OF A PERSON’S INCOME, FOR THOSE MAKING BETWEEN 50K AND 175K PER YEAR. THE COST OF THAT PROGRAM HAS NOT BEEN FIGURED, AND THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT COULD BE AVAILABLE FOR THE PROGRAM WILL BE TALKED ABOUT THIS WEEK.

ANGLERS HAVE UNTIL MARCH 18 TO HAVE ICE SHELTERS OFF OF NORTHERN MINNESOTA INLAND WATERS, BUT WITH THIS YEAR’S WEATHER, CONSERVATION OFFICERS ARE SAYING THAT WAITING THAT LONG, MIGHT BE TOO LATE. ICE CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE AND SOME RESORTS HAVE ALREADY CLOSED THEIR ACCESS FOR THE SEASON. THAT DATE DOES NOT APPLY TO BORDER WATERS SUCH AS LAKE OF THE WOODS.

THE FINAL NUMBERS ARE IN, AND IN MINNESOTA THE 2023 DEER HARVEST WAS DOWN 8% FROM 2022. THERE WERE 158,678 DEER HARVESTED IN TOTAL. THE NORTHWEST REGION WAS DOWN 8%, WHILE THE NORTHEAST SAW THE BIGGEST DECEASE AT 21%.

IT’S THAT OF YEAR ONCE AGAIN TO RE-UP ON YOUR HUNTING, TRAPPING, AND FISHING LICENSES. YOUR 2023 LICENSES EXPIRE THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH AND ONES FOR 2024 ARE NOW AVAILABLE.

THE ROSEAU AREA ARTS ASSOCIATION HAS OPENED IT’S WINDOW TO APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS. THOSE ARE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN ROSEAU, WARROAD, BADGER AND GREENBUSH.

GOP AND DFL PARTIES ARE HOLDING PRECINCT CAUCUSES THIS WEEK ACROSS ROSEAU, KITTSON, AND OTHER COUNTIES.
