SPRING CONDITIONS AND HIGH WINDS ON SUNDAY LED TO A WILDFIRE STARTING IN THE AGASSIZ NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE ON SUNDAY, DESTROYING ROUGHLY 1200 ACRES. THEY ARE SAYING THE FIRE FIGHT OPERATIONS ARE NOW INTO A MANAGEMENT STAGE, WHICH MEANS THE FIRE IS CONTAINED AND THE AREA IS EXPECTED TO SMOLDER FOR THE COMING DAYS. OFFICIALLY NAMED THE BERG WILDFIRE, THE MINNESOTA DNR IS MONITORING THE SITUATION.

AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATION A NUMBER OF SUSPECTED ANIMAL POISONINGS NEAR GRYGLA. ANIMALS THAT WERE FOUND DEAD OF THE WMA IN MARCH INCLUDED A HOMEOWNERS BLACK LAB, A RED FOX, PINE MARTEN, SKUNK, AND TWO BIRDS. CONSERVATION OFFICER BEN HUENER HAS BEEN WORKING THE CASE AND SAYS ANOTHER DOG HAD BECOME SICK BUT SURVIVED. THE ANIMALS HAD BEEN SENT OFF FOR TESTING TO DETERMINE A MORE SPECIFIC CAUSE OF DEATH, BUT THE TIMELINE FOR THOSE RESULTS IS UNKNOWN.

A LIFECARE WALK-RUN IS THIS SATURDAY. IT’S ON A 5-K COURSE, THERE’S A KIDS RUN AT 8:45 IN THE MORNING, AND THE MAIN COURSE OPENS AT 9 AM. THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER ONLINE.

THE HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE PASSED A BILL LAST WEEK THAT WOULD REMOVE FEDERAL ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT PROTECTIONS FOR GRAY WOLVES, BUT THE BILL FACES SLIM CHANCES OF MAKING THROUGH THE DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED SENATE. IF IT DID PASS, CONTROL WOULD GO BACK TO STATE AND TRIBAL RESOURCES.

IN THE RED RIVER VALLEY, SPRING FLOODING NEVER DID GET QUITE AS BAD AS EXPECTED AND REMAINED AT A MANAGEABLE STAGE FOR MOST COMMUNITIES. THE FACT THAT TEMPERATURES REMAINED BELOW NORMAL AND SOIL WAS ABLE TO ABSORB MORE QUICKLY WERE MAIN FACTORS. THE RIVER IS STILL ON THE RISE IN AREAS SUCH AS DRAYTON AND PEMBINA, BUT AGAIN, THINGS SHOULD NOT EXCEED MODERATE FLOOD STAGE.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR STANLEY LAWRENCE SPINA WILL BE HELD THIS SATURDAY (4-8 PM) AT THE WARROAD ESTATES GOLF COURSE CLUBHOUSE. STAN PASSED AWAY ON APRIL 27 AT THE AGE OF 66.
