This weekend marks the onset of the season’s initial cold snap for eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota, with forecasted wind chills ranging from -15 to -40 degrees in Grand Forks. The Grand Forks Herald reports that Vince Godon, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, anticipates the coldest temperatures of the winter, emphasizing the need for precautionary measures. Nightly lows in Roseau are projected to be -6 on Friday, -7 on Saturday, and -7 on Sunday. While this weekend is expected to be the coldest, with temperatures between 6 and 7 below zero, John Wheeler, a meteorologist at WDAY, suggests that overall, it is not exceptionally cold for mid-January.

Minneapolis has faired inflation the best in the most recent Wallet Hub report on changes in inflation by city, as the year-over-year inflation rate stands at 3.4% in December. The report analyzes 23 major Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) using the Consumer Price Index to assess short and long-term inflation trends. The cities experiencing the biggest inflation problems include Dallas, TX, and Miami, FL, while Minneapolis, MN, and San Francisco, CA, are among those with the smallest inflation issues

Five farm organizations are urging the Minnesota Court of Appeals to ensure fairness for livestock farmers by officially advocating for the Daley Farm in Lewiston, which has faced a prolonged legal battle over its expansion plans. The Minnesota Milk Producers Association, Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, Minnesota Pork Producers Association, Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association, and Winona County Farm Bureau have filed a motion to participate in the Daley Farm case, questioning whether the family-owned farm was treated justly by the Winona County Board of Adjustment in denying a permit for herd expansion. The farm groups aim to safeguard livestock farmers from potential bias in local-level decisions regarding expansions and emphasize the importance of supporting multi-generational, independent family-owned operations like the Daley Farm.

Northland Community and Technical College students, for the first time in 40 years, are independently constructing the annual project house on campus, showcasing their skills to the entire community. Previously, students had to travel off-campus for construction projects, but this year’s on-campus location eliminates transportation issues. The project involves students from various trades programs, including carpentry, construction electricity, HVAC, and plumbing, providing hands-on training for critical positions in a region facing a workforce shortage in skilled trades.

On January 15, 2024, Minnesota’s Free Park Day offers fee-free access to all 75 state parks and recreation areas, including our Hayes Lake and Lake Bronson with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources waiving vehicle permit fees. Residents are encouraged to embrace winter activities like birding, hiking, and photography, with options for snow-related pursuits if weather permits. The initiative, one of four yearly free days, aims to diversify park visits beyond summer, promoting year-round exploration. Visitors should check park webpages for updates and use free maps available in the Avenza app or at ranger stations. A Funeral Service for brother and sister, Dave and Dolleen Anderson will be held at Rose Free Lutheran Church is today Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 am, with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will be held at Moe-Rose Cemetery. Dave was 65. Dolleen was 55. Arrangements entrusted to the Helgeson Funeral Chapel.

Graveside services for LaVonne Baade of Baudette, Minnesota will be held today Friday January 12th, 2024 at 3:30pm at the Pitt Cemetery with a lunch and gathering to follow at the Moose Lodge in Baudette. LaVonne Gayle Baade Passed away December 22, 2023 at the age of 77.  Helgeson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A Memorial Service for Deon Willcox will take place on Monday, January 15, 2024 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau at 2:00 pm with a visitation an hour prior. A Visitation will also take place the night before at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau from 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.  Arrangements entrusted to the Helgeson Funeral Chapel.
