The Roseau County Sheriff’s Department reports that In the early hours of Yesterday, Tuesday January 9, 2024, a fatal house fire occurred south of Warroad at the junction of County Road #12 and County Road #5. One female occupant lost her life, and a male occupant sustained injuries, being taken to Lifecare Medical Center in Roseau.
The Minnesota Fire Marshals office, in conjunction with the Roseau County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the incident. The Warroad Fire Department and Warroad Rescue Ambulance Service assisted and were on the scene.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that a Crookston man, Cameron Michael Lafriniere, pleaded guilty on Monday to three felony charges stemming from a September protest at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center. Lafriniere, 18, admitted to simple assault on an officer, inciting a riot in a detention facility, and terrorizing, while a plea agreement resulted in the dismissal of additional charges related to physical obstruction and criminal mischief during the incident on September 20, 2023.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is actively seeking 200 dedicated students for paid summer internships to explore careers in natural resources. These internships, spanning various fields such as fisheries, forestry, park operations, watercraft inspections, and communications, provide valuable training and contribute to creating a sustainable and inclusive Minnesota. Interested candidates fulfilling academic requirements or seeking academic credit can apply through the state of Minnesota careers website by January 31, with positions commencing in May and June. This weekend Roseau will be hosting the John Wensloff PeeWee B tournament.

The Roseau Civic and Commerce Annual Banquet is set for a fresh twist, with the Board unveiling plans to alternate between casual networking meetings and formal keynote speaker events every other year. This year’s edition promises a vibrant Mexican fiesta, featuring a buffet with traditional beef and smoked pork tacos, pork tamales, & Spanish rice. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is set to implement winter load increases on unrestricted highways in the North seasonal load limit zone starting at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11. Information on seasonal load limit zones, restricted routes, and specific load limit details can be accessed through the MnDOT load limits map at mndot.gov/loadlimits.

The vehicle restriction on Upper Red Lake, implemented on December 30 for safety concerns after multiple ice rescue incidents, is set to be lifted today. Citing improved ice conditions due to colder weather and calmer winds, authorities decided to end the restriction, emphasizing ongoing safety precautions and the need for continuous ice thickness assessments based on Minnesota Department of Natural Resources guidelines.

A Funeral Service for brother and sister, Dave and Dolleen Anderson will be held at Rose Free Lutheran Church on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 am, with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will be held at Moe-Rose Cemetery. Dave was 65. Dolleen was 55. Arrangements entrusted to the Helgeson Funeral Chapel.

Graveside services for LaVonne Baade of Baudette, Minnesota will be held on Friday January 12th, 2024 at 3:30pm at the Pitt Cemetery with a lunch and gathering to follow at the Moose Lodge in Baudette. LaVonne Gayle Baade Passed away December 22, 2023 at the age of 77.  Helgeson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
